Working parents who home school

by elizabeth on January 7th, 2008

When I read this article about Work-Homeschool balance, I realized I’d never thought of this before: are there homeschooling parents who both work outside the home?

How does that work? Just curious.

That sounds like it would give a new meaning to “balance”.

It’s quite simple, actually. With homeschooling there are no constraints as far as when learning occurs..so some people school after work. Some people work swing schedules with their spouses, if the student is old enough, since homeschooling encourages self directed learning, they can do their own schooling, checking with the parent every evening.
Sometimes grandparents help out. There are as many ways to do homeschool as there are homeschoolers.

According to the most recent survey from the National Center for Education Statistics, in more than a third of homeschooling families, all parents in the household (two for a two-parent family, one for a one-parent family) work full time outside the home.

Mayre is right. These families take advantage of the flexibility that homeschooling offers and find a way to make it work for them.

Lisa Patton, the WKRN weather person, does or did homeschool her children, but I believe her husband works from home.

I know two sets of parents who homeschool and work full time. In one case, the kid’s are old enough to complete their own assignments (teenagers). The parents simply make sure that the work is done. In another case, the babysitter (who’s a former teacher) does the actual homeschooling.

And I thought MY entire evening schedule was taken up with homework. I officially quit complaining*.

I know many couples who do a swing type shift. Each teaches the subjects they are strongest in while the other spouse is away at work. It is a great system.
