Working from the same todo list

by mike on November 3rd, 2006

There is a post over at Parent Hacks about how spouses should coordinate chores around the house by working from the same todo list. Great tip for anybody that works all day and still has stuff to do when they get home. And let’s face it, that probably includes almost all of us whether we go into the office or stay home with the
kids or any combination in between.

When things seem to be getting a little crazy around the house, that little parent hack works well for us. As the post points out, you will be given an opportunity to choose which of the open chores you want to work on next and you will both know that progress is being made on the specific things that need to get done that night.

We are currently working on a house project that takes up a big share of our normal chore time so we are not currently using any list at all. When the project is finished, we will go back to writing the open projects on the chalkboard door we painted on the door leading to the garage. We both constantly see the list, add to the list, and cross things off the list. I am the chore procrastinator, so seeing the list constantly reminds me that I have stuff to do. My wife is the constant over worker and having the
list on the door encourages us to talk about the chores and gives her better comfort when we decide who is going to be doing what on the list.

I like the concept of the list allowing both of us to find chores that appeal more to each of us on that specific night. It does not happen that way for us very often. Over the years, we have both fallen into a groove of doing the same things. While I could see the advantage of choosing to unload and load the dishwasher instead of vacuuming some night, there is also a lot to be said for picking the chores that you can get done the quickest and just plowing through the list. Whether you decide to pick the chores
that strike your fancy that night or each have your specialties, working from the same list is a great way to keep everybody on the same page and make sure that everything gets done.
