When parents help parents, it’s not a war

by elizabeth on January 14th, 2007

Several months ago, the book Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families by Leslie Morgan Steiner, was roundly discussed in the media.

In a series of essays, she attempts to resolve the conflicts and “fighting” between mothers who stay at home to raise children, and, mothers who raise children while working. Though it received it’s share of criticism, it certainly stimulated a lot of discussion.

Ms. Steiner also writes a blog at the Washington Post called “On Balance”. In an entry titled, “The Kindness of Other Moms“, she comes to an important conclusion based on her own experience:

As I wrote the book, I discovered that the only real “mommy war” was inside my own head as I struggled to balance my life. My jealousy of other moms stemmed only from my insecurities; I don’t feel judgmental of other moms any longer. And I don’t feel judged in return anymore, either. More often than not, other moms are my safety net, my cheerleaders, my life-saving network.

I think dads help other dads, too, the whole concept probably applies to parents rather than just mothers, but, I’m pretty sure dads don’t sit around and talk about it.

I remember when that “fight” bubbled up, and it seemed the mainstream media (read: Today show) made it a much bigger deal than necessary.

It seems that every so often this “fight” makes its way into the media. It makes me think that they bring it out just for the ratings they get. I don’t get the impression that a real “fight” even exists.
