Travelling with an extra relative
Our holiday travelling group is increasing by one tomorrow. While visiting my wife’s family, we (and more importantly his parents) officially decided that we would bring my nephew home to spend the night.
Tomorrow, we are going to visit my family and my nephew’s parents are going to tackle the crazy Christmas rush. He is one year younger than the twins, so we will be watching 3 kids under 4 years old. His parents will be fighting for bargains. I think we have the easier challenge.
A few things to remember when introducing a toddler to a strange area.
- When you first arrive let him cuddle close or wander as he sees fit.
- Don’t try to push him to hug everybody or even really acknowledge them for a little while.
- Keep him away from the loud relatives that like to tickle and toss little kids around.
My nephew just recently potty trained, so we will also need to make sure that we show him the bathrooms right away and try to keep track of how often he has gone in case he gets too busy or too distracted to remember to ask to go by himself.
