Those crazy exhausting days of summer

by elizabeth on June 11th, 2008

Summer is in full swing here.

The kids and my husband are all out of school for the next couple of months. And, as I’m fond of telling you on many occasions, I am the only one in the house who has to get up and be anywhere in the mornings.

I’m exhausted.

Our daily routine has gone into “way too late at night” default mode.

When I get home from work, the party has just begun. We go here, we go there, we do this, we do that and then I find that this and that take a lot of time, and suddenly it’s midnight and I forgot to go to bed again.

Pretty heady stuff for a weeknight for me since I am a delicate Southern flower and I wilt easily.

While I don’t want to dampen anyone’s fun, I think my family just doesn’t get that my schedule is the same as always, I gotta get up and go to work in the mornings.

As much as I’d like to hang out at home all the time, the kids have grown accustomed to what we like to call food, clothing and shelter, and my job is funny about wanting me to, you know, be there, so I’m thinking I’d better keep going, even if I’m tired.

To top it off, the kids have become “Rulers of the Night”.

They’re getting older, so they stay up later, but it sure is cutting into the time I need to “get things done”.

While I love nothing more than spending time with them, it’s unnatural for me to have to discuss (as in at this very moment) Star Wars and the Renaissance Festival at midnight on a Wednesday.

I agree with you. When you work full time and the teens are home during the day sleeping, everything gets thrown off kilter. So I decided that we all have normal bedtimes and they have to hit the sack also. Plus they have chores to take care of during the day to relieve my housework. Hey, they’re home, why not? Then again, my husband has the same schedule as me.

Yes, I hate that work thing, always getting in the way. You know, one of the best things about summer for me while I was still in school was staying up and reading into the wee hours of the morning. My mom was a SAHM, and she was also a night owl. There were many times that she knocked on my door at 2:00 a.m. to ask if I wanted to go grocery shopping with her. No lines at that time of the night, you know? But it wasn’t deserted either.

My husband’s been on vacation this week and I am certainly smelling what you’re stepping in there. I’m sooo tired! The kids’ routine is off and they’re staying up playing later and later. We’ve also been doing VBS this week and had company come one night..thank gooness it’s Friday!

[…] I’ve often written about how summer is a mixed blessing for me. […]
