The “Lunch” Hour

by elizabeth on March 22nd, 2007

lunch.jpgShort of employing the Lunch Clock, if you are lucky enough to get a break at work, there’s never enough time.

While everyone enjoys a break, parents in particular are often grateful for the extra time to try to do a few things you can’t get done at home.

However, if you’re like me, sometimes, it’s hard to know where to start with your time:

Should I get on the phone and make those overdue appointments?

After all, it’s time to schedule that camp physical, and, I have no idea when my daughter last went to the orthodontist.

Should I go to the drugstore and pick up the things I keep forgetting at Target?

My work setting isn’t usually conducive to going anywhere by car, as I need a passport to get to the parking lot, so, if I want to go somewhere, I have to walk, better get started.

Oh, while I’m there, I can get Easter candy, birthday party gifts, and, groceries. Wait, I’d have to carry all that, and, I’m pretty sure CVS isn’t the most economical option for grocery shopping. Hot Pockets for breakfast, kids?

Should I have brought the clean laundry to work so I could fold it?

Kidding. Mostly.

Should I call neglected friends to meet for lunch?

The odds of making good on oft-promised “getting together sometime” aren’t likely to happen after work at least for the next 15 years, or, so. Unless they are willing to come get me, I have to talk them into meeting near my work (see above), and, it’s not always easy to park around here.

Should I use the time to get some non-work related tasks done on the computer?

Depends on your company, but, I feel better about not using work computers, so, I set off on foot in search of free wifi. But, by the time I get there, buy a token something, sit down, and, set things up, it seems like the break is over.

Should I read the newspaper?

Like many parents, there’s often no time to keep up with the news. I heard there’s this new show called “American Idol”. I wonder if anyone will watch?

I give up. Maybe I should just eat lunch since I used all my time thinking about this.
