The Future of Technology
Check out this view of the future. According to one columnist, the future will involve more technology and less human interaction. Much less. He says:
“People will work from where they are situated, permanently logged onto a super-fast Internet. Access will come from a range of connection devices. Wearable computers will be all the rage, but early adopters will have opted for more permanent machinery that is physically implanted. Employees will work in teams that have a truly global makeup. As a result of technologically enhanced globalization, working days will run on WT (world time) in one language — a hybrid known as Global English.”
On one hand, this vision scares me. On the other hand, it’s just one person’s opinion and isn’t written in stone. After all, remember how when home videos were first invented “experts” said no one would ever go to a movie again? Or how when computers were invented we would have a “paperless society?”
Whenever someone predicts a future that makes humans sound like robots, I just can’t see it. People AREN’T robots. Plain and simple. Even the most socially inept people around still like being in the company of other people. We need each other.

Sounds kind of like the Borg from Star Trek. No thanks, not for me - as much as I love my laptop and internet and all the freedom wireless gives me, “unplugging” and getting away from it at the end of the day is what it’s all about!

Technology has certainly made a lot of things easier, but I fear our kids may start losing touch with important things like social skills, body language. daily exercise, etc. Thanks!

I remember I thought by the yr 2000 we would all be like the jetsons (but so far we are not flying around –well not in our own personal things)
I hope we always need other people. It sure will be very lonely.

I do think the way we communicate is changing–social networking, blogs, texting…where we used to talk on the phone, write letters, even email more. But society adapts, and I don’t think in the end it will be any worse than when the telephone first became popular–there were predictions that the telephone would kill personal social interaction! And it did drastically change things, but that’s the nature of life. Change is not automatically bad.

I don’t think we can even fathom where technology has yet to go and yes, I think automation has not even begun to take over to the extent it will.

Technology is exciting and progressive and positive, but with the pluses come some minuses that have already altered society for the worse. Recently texting has come into vogue and I watch bemusedly as my grown children text back and forth with their friends. This, to me, is a giant step BACKWARD. Holding a phone in your hand, you send a message in shorthand to your friend instead of making the deeper connection of hearing each other voices.

I actually hope people will use less technology in the future than they do now, or at least be a bit more discriminating about it. If you include iPod ear buds, implanted technology is already here.

More and more people are ‘telecommuting’: working for large (or small) businesses at home through the internet, phone, and video conferencing and this has allowed for a more global workforce already. Cell phones have also allowed us to be more “permanently connected” to the internet. As far as computers being physically implanted on our person — I’d say it’s definitely possible, though probably not for the purposes of work (as in our occupation) but probably to enhance any movement or sense, especially for those with handicaps. I think that people will always need stimulation from being around other people - it’s innate - so while our lives will continue to be profoundly changed by technology, we’ll still want families and friends and will still gather in places like cafes, markets, concerts, etc.

Technology can be great in some ways, but I do feel it is taking over more and more. People just are not as active in their every day lives because of all the new technology. I definitely see the effect it has on our children today.

I could definitely see a lot less human interaction. With the crime getting worse and worse there will be less trust.

Technology can be wonderful and it can be terrible at the same time. It scares me that kids in general are more into tech stuff and less into making mud pies and playing backyard football with the neighborhood kids…they don’t know what they are missing out on.

I agree that people will lose their jobs to technology in some aspects. But I also believe there are plenty of opportunities out there that machines simply cannot do. Thanks for the great contest!

I look at how far we came in the last 25 years,I remember buying a home computer in 1982 for $5,000. and it was only DOS,in 10 years I think more people will be working from home,saving fuel and it is starting to go to a paperless world. I think technology will be quite a bit more in the next 10 years.

Personally, I’ve met some people at work that I would’ve liked to have avoided ever meeting. Then again, I met some very interesting people that I just love! I love the technology that allows you to work in the environment of your choice and possibly save gas and money on facilities. We just need to balance and perfect the idea.

Remember when “video phones” were the future, a la Jetsons? Now we have Skype and webcams and that “future” is here. It isn’t that dramatic. Like you said, we are still humans. I think we become jaded to each new advance in technology to the point where only a Rip Van Winkle would be amazed. :)

Evolution of technology is incredible. It lessens the errands of the people. Somehow, misuse of technology in the future may lead to human misbehavior and can cause troubles. Although it could happen, it still depends on how people deals with the technology.
