Tender Tidings

by elizabeth on January 16th, 2008

Tender Tidings is a company that bills itself as a “solution for working parents”.

“Solution” to what?

It’s essentially streaming video that you set up at home to view whatever you’ve got going on at home that you need to see while you’re away.

That’s all well and good, and, it might be a great application for some situations, but, good grief, why would they play on the image of a working parent never being at home and “missing all the milestones”, etc.?

The site even states that it can be used to assist with senior care, pet care, etc. Why not bill it simply as a way to view home when you can’t be there?

Additionally, it’s obviously meant for working mothers what with the flowers, the “tender” in the name and the soft photos.

It’s not that it’s not a good idea for some people, I just resent the marketing to working mothers that plays on the notion that they all feel “guilty” for working away from home.

In the words of the immortal Chandler Bing, “Could that be a bigger stereotype?”

What are you talking about? I looked at the site and don’t see where you are coming from on the gender reference or the guilt comment. I looks like a great site to me.

As the husband of a woman who gave up a career to care for our daughter, and the proud father of a little girl who will grow up to someday be empowered enough to make this decision for herself, I see this from a different perspective.

As a customer of Tender Tidings, I’ve had great fun “dropping in” to see my daughter instead of checking CNN when I have a spare moment. Today, I just happened to catch the first time she used a fork. It made my afternoon.

Irrespective of the potential “sterotypes”, I don’t feel guilty for working. That being said, the reality is I am gone all day. This product/service makes it a little easier.
