Take Your Children to Work Day
Yes, I know, Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day has already passed, I am interested to see how you spent it.
I have never really worked in a job where it was appropriate to bring a child to work with me, but, I know there are people who feel that it is their God-given right to celebrate this day in the way of their choosing, even if the workplace is not conducive to young children.
I think it’s interesting how there are a few ways to view this event.
Some people view it as a sort of mini internship day where older children can see what a day at a particular career is like, while others view it as a time to show junior where mommy and daddy spend their days, while still others use the time to simply bring their kids in to work to show them off.
What’s been your experience with this day? I support what I think is the original intent of this event, but, I wonder if the various interpretations of what it’s about have clouded it a little.

My former employer, at the request of local school districts, held their event over the summer and they had a special lunch for kids/parents and then had the parents take the kids on a tour of our campus (it was a large corporation) and they had different things for the kids to do and highlighted some of the services that we provided that would be of interest.
The highlight of the day was always the dog that the company “employed” to keep the geese at bay.
My kids always enjoyed it and I think it was a good format as it was not all day.

I think work is highly overrated in general, and why expose kids to adult boredom when they have their own to focus on. There are not that many jobs that are intrinsically interesting. There’s a reason they call it “work,” not “play.”
When I was a child/teenager, each of my parents took me on an informal basis to their respective work sites — it didn’t look all that thrilling then. Codifying take-your-kid-to-work day has always struck me as an interesting notion, but one whose execution is not all the exciting.
