Summer Camp time

by elizabeth on January 3rd, 2007

The Summer Camp Handbook : Everything You Need to Find, Choose and Get Ready for Overnight Camp -- and Skip the HomesicknessAs we all know, childcare, no matter the reason or the form, can be an issue in any family with kids.

It can be especially challenging in families where both parents, or, the primary parent works for a signed paycheck (yes, I really do have trouble saying this properly, no offense intended to anyone).

With school-age children, just when you feel like you’ve spent all fall lining up care for the holiday break, it’s time to think about what they are going to be doing for the summer. While we would all love for our children to be able to roam free without scheduled activities during the summer, it’s just not always possible, or, for some kids, wise.

Yep, it’s time to sign up for summer camp! And? Apparently, we’re already behind.

I grew up going to summer camp, and, actually met my husband there (we were employees), so camp is important to us. My oldest has gone for 3 years, and, the middle one will go this year.

But, childcare isn’t the only reason summer camps are popular.

Like our family, many people attend camp because of family tradition. People also want their children to have an old-fashioned outdoor experience, which can be sadly lacking these days. Parents also might find value in specialty camps such as a sports camp, or, a camp with a religious emphasis where their children receive specific instruction.

There are many resources for locating a camp, and, a good place to start is the American Camp Association.

What do your kids do during the summer?

Hmm… summer camp. Our oldest turns six in February. Think there might be something appropriate for her age?

My kids are too young, but I went to all of the following:
Camp St. Christopher (near Charleston, SC)
    Camp Kanuga (Mountains of NC)
    Ambassador Camp (Lake Waccamaw, SC)

And Mr. Belle was a camper, counselor, and staff member at Camp St. Christopher which is the one I would recommend. Quite a drive for you, BUT you could spend a few nights in or around Charleston!

I was the registrar for a summer sleep away camp in New York, and my mother and father in law are both camping professionals. Hubby and I got together at camp, and his younger sister is working on her 19th summer at the same camp. So, what I’m rambling on about is, I know from camp. I can’t even tell you how important I think it is. We debate about what camp we’ll send our 1 year old someday when he’s older. But I can’t tell you how glad I am that you wrote this entry.

And there’s definitely camping programs for 6 years olds, Bald Man.
