Resolve to listen more closely to children, even after a long day at work

by elizabeth on January 3rd, 2008

january1.jpgLists of New Years Resolutions are easy to come by this time of year (getting organized being a popular one)

I don’t usually make any for more reasons than you care to hear about, but, this list by Alex Miller of Vail Daily in Colorado struck me.

His goals for his family, and, the first one is what got my attention as the parent of a kindergartener:

1. Listen more to the kindergartener. Sometimes the rapid-fire discourses wash over me, and I don’t appreciate or understand everything he’s saying. Some of it may be incomprehensible to anyone but himself, but I’m sure there are some pearls in there as well. He’s the last of our bunch, so I want to hear it all and cherish it as we go.

2. Same for the three teens, although listening with them often means watching and trying to pick up on other cues. They can be masters of withheld information, so spending more time with them and letting it come out organically (versus “20 questions”) is the way to go.

Definite food for thought for me.
