Relocating for education
This was new to me, but, according to this CareerJournal.com article, apparently, people will pick up and move their families, sometimes across the country, in order for their children to go to what they perceive as “the best” high school.
Now, while I’ve heard of people moving to a different neighborhood or county in order to be in a more desirable school district, to me, this is nuts:
Across the country, a small but growing number of parents like the O’Gormans are dramatically altering their families’ lives to pursue the perfect private school for their children. While past generations of parents might have shifted addresses within a town to be near a particular school, or shipped junior off to boarding school, these parents are choosing school first, location second.
Sometimes, this even means career changes for the parents, and, sometimes, insane commutes, such as 5 hours one way.
When it comes to education, I’m all for choosing the school that’s best for you, but, at some point, there must be a diminishing return, i.e. the family changes some of these people make, are bound to reduce the “best-ness” of the school.
There are fine schools everywhere, I guess I just don’t “get it”. I call it “college” if extreme relocation is involved.

Wow! That does seem extreme. I can’t imagine relocating more than across town for my children’s education.

Well, in Singapore, parents do re-locate for the sake of their children being able to enter ‘better’ primary schools. In Singapore, priority is given to families who leave within 1 km of the schools and families move a few years in advance to fulfill the residency requirements. It also cause increases in property prices where these schools are located.
Thankfully, Singapore is a small country. So, a move across the country is not that drastic a move. :)
