Personal items in your work space
When we’re at work, it’s natural to think about your family during the day. Some people have pictures or memorabilia on their desks or in their work area, but, is this considered professional?
I know workplace rules about personal items vary from office to office. Some employees have no restrictions, while others can have no personal items in the work area at all. However, I’m guessing that most places fall somewhere in between.
As a co-worker, customer or manager, I notice an excess of personal items in a work space, and, I have to say that, depending on the situation, I have been led to wonder how seriously a person takes their job. I know some people are into making the office look just like home, but, I’m not one of them.
A couple of pictures loved ones for inspiration is one thing. I think it’s certainly commendable to be proud of your family, and, I often enjoy looking at pictures. However, professionally, I think less is more. Entire scrapbooks and pictorial anthologies on the wall makes me think that person’s attention is elsewhere.
Take a look around your work space. It’s yours, and, personalization is good, but, don’t sacrifice a professional appearance. After all, those smiling faces in all those photos are why you need to be there, and, do your job well in the first place.
Make sure you are making a good impression.

Yes ma’am!
I am pretty much the same way already, so I imagine my desk would pass inspection.

We are not allowed to have any personal items at our desk at all, leaving us to store them in the break room. And the lockers they provide are not large enough to put a purse or brief case into, and one afternoon my purse was stolen and credit cards used and so forth. Because an employee opened the back door do to poor circulation in our building my work feels that they don’t have to compensate anything. I’M VERY ANGRY AND WOULD LIKE SOME ADVICE. The issue goes much more deeper then I’m willing to write at this point, but if there is anyone who could help LEGALLY that would make me somewhat happy!
