House chaos and the working parent
My middle son, age 11 has a new friend.
He’s spending the night tonight and I don’t know the parents, so I called the mother yesterday to finalize our plans.
We chatted a moment about my son’s visit over there last week. She was explained to me that she works and that she takes care of her elderly mother who lives with them, so their house is pretty messy.
After further conversation, I gathered that the friend had asked his dad and not his mother if my son could spend the night, so the mother was surprised to see my son that day.
She told me she apologized to my son for the condition of the house (which, after our conversation, I gathered may actually be in the “next level” of messy) and, my son, polite boy that he is, told her: “Oh, don’t worry, our house is worse than this!”
Just in case, I made sure I cleaned the house before he came over today.

LOL!
Miss C went over to a friend’s house Thursday and I cleaned the house to make sure it was presentable when they brought her home and the dad never even walked in.
So much for my efforts. ;)

Our house is a disaster but one of my son’s friends has one that is 10x worse. Whenever I point out to my son that ours isn’t as bad as so-and-so’s, he tells me that it’s not a competition. I admit that I take a huge guilty pleasure in picking up son at this other house and gazing at the chaos. It gives me a good idea of what people must think when they get a load of my place.

Oddly enough, it seems the people that are the most worried about just how messy their house is, are the one’s that are the furthest from “the worst” that they often think (or claim) they are.
Few people (that don’t have outside help) have a “museum” perfect house all the time (though somehow my mother managed to… still baffles me), and much like that “soccer mom” that appears to worry about her make up and outfit and looks a little too good for standing on the sidelines at a kid’s game… all show… and the mess underneath is worse than normal.
