Happy National Boss Day!

by elizabeth on October 16th, 2007

bossday.bmpToday is National Boss Day!

No, not the day for the short bossy people at home who want dinner every night, it’s a day to honor those people who mentor us and sign our paychecks.

National Boss Day began in 1958 when Patricia Bays Haroski, then an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Ill., registered the holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Haroski chose Oct. 16, her father’s birthday, as the date for National Boss Day because she felt he was an exemplary boss.

National Boss Day has become an international celebration in recent years and now is observed in countries such a England, Australia and South Africa.

If you are so inclined, give your regards to your superiors at work, it’s not as easy as it looks. If you are having problems, you can always consult the BossMan Owner’s Manual.

Just remember, in the immortal words of John Gotti, “If you think your boss is stupid, remember: you wouldn’t have a job if he was any smarter.”

I am a (relatively new) manager and no one has wished me a happy boss’ day, but I think I would be kind of embarassed if they did. I always think these kinds of holidays are a bit odd, they seem to be marketed heavily by Hallmark and that makes me suspicious. Not that I don’t like Hallmark; I am a Crown member.

I like the quote though, I might have to use that one!!

I always explained away my bosses with the Peter Principal (”In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence.”)

But then I started to wonder what that said of me.
