Exercising at work
We’ve already talked about how tough it is to make time for exercise with a career and kids.
Though it’s very unlike me, I’ve been doing it a lot more lately, and, it’s still not any easier to fit into the day, even with the kids out of school for the summer.
I know some people exercise on their lunch hour at work. Are you one of them? If so, I have a couple of questions:
-do you have more than an hour for lunch?
-how do you clean up afterward?
-by the time you change clothes, and, get underway, is it really worth the effort since you have to allow time to clean up, and, get back to wok?
At one job I had, some of us went to the track at lunch, and, ran. It was quite the production, we had to go to a lesser used restroom on another floor to change clothes, then we had to get in the car and drive over there, do the actual exercise, come back, invade the bathroom again, and, clean up in the sink.
It was a pain to do, and, most likely painful to smell us, since there were no shower facilities.
Is there another way to exercise at work other than taking a casual walk?

These are all the questions that I ask myself when I realize that lunch time is pretty much the only time that I have to work out. Maybe the problem is that Southern Women are supposed to “glow” and not “sweat”? I am sorry to say the “glow” gene skipped me.
Lately, I have been toying with the idea of going at 6:30 and getting back to the house about 7:45 (the time Mr. B. leaves).

My only success has been arriving at work an hour early to exercise. I find that I can get my workout in before the day starts, I am not distracted by being home while I clean up, and I am incredibly productive in the first few hours in my office because the adrenaline is still pumping. I should mention that I am lucky enough to work in a building with a shower room and it took months to perfect the wash and wear hair.

I struggle with this too! I used to work out during lunch, but the “how do you clean up afterwards” problem was an issue. If I took a shower and redid my makeup, I added 20 minutes to my hour gym time, and it was just too long. Now I try to get up at 6 am 3 days a week and get to the gym - it’s a drag, I get very little sleep as it is, but I do find that it energizes me (even though later in the day I feel like I need a nap.) From lots of interviews we did for Work It, Mom! looks like many of us are waking up early to hit the treadmill!

I struggle with this as well. I have a nice and inexpensive gym at work and I have not yet figured out how to get around looking good after working out during lunch. What I do is work through lunch and then take my lunch hour at the end of the day and then exercise then. My boss is pretty good at those types of requests.
