Eating at work success starts at home the night before

by mike on October 9th, 2006

I have a work problem.  Actually, more directly, I have a problem making good decisions sometimes.  And, once I start heading down a path it quickly becomes a habit that I have trouble breaking out of.  And, so now I have a work problem.

I eat very poorly.

But, I don’t think this is a problem that only I have.  I look around at lunch time and everybody is eating something that came in a wrapper with a logo on it.  We are a nation of fast food lunchers…and breakfasters.

Recently, I’ve managed to develop a Dunkin’ Donuts addiction.  I can quit anytime I want…only I can’t.  I wake up at 5 am while the house is still asleep.  I get out of the house as quickly and quietly as possible.  On the way in to work, I pick up something to eat.  That’s a problem.

I also forget/refuse to pack a lunch before I go to bed and then end up eating something bad for me out of the deli in the building or something worse for me at the nearby Taco Bell.  That is an oh-so-delicious problem.
Sometimes I get grumpy when I think about the once a week that my mom takes the kids to McDonalds for lunch.  But, in reality, I often have weeks at work where I eat out 8-10 meals between Monday and Friday.  There is no way I would ever let my kids do that.  Think of how fat they would get.

One of the kids goes to preschool in the morning, the other goes in the afternoon.  To make the transition manageable, we pack lunches for the kids the night before in their little lunch boxes.  I need to start participating in that routine more often and make sure that I pack my breakfast and lunch.

Not only will I get rich on the nearly $10/day I spend on food out of my own fun money, but I will probably quit gaining weight.

I’m sure I am not the only person that wishes they would pack a lunch more frequently.  Here’s the secret.  Force yourself to pack it the night before.  If you wait until the morning, it will never get done.
