Drinking with the kids

by mike on November 29th, 2006

Treena Shapiro writes about “family-friendly pubs and child-friendly bar and grills.” and says:

Apparently parents don’t want to have to make the choice between spending time with their kids and giving up more adult-type social activities, so they’re taking their kids with them when they go drinking.

I always think it is strange when I see parents drinking in public with their kids. I have trouble convincing myself to have a beer in my own house after they fall asleep because I’m afraid of what I would do if I got drunk and there was some emergency.

I end up having about 12 beers a year and normally during a couple straight weeks.

The place I see dad’s drinking around their kids the most is in my own neighborhood. There are a few dads that get together in the driveway to watch their kids playing and the dads are usually drinking.

A couple 4th of July’s ago, the dad that seems to have beers in his hand the most frequently had most of the young neighborhood kids hanging around his drivewsay. One of the kids ended getting burned with some fireworks that the dad was setting off.

Fortunately, the burn was minor but his dad was very mad and did a lot of yelling at the other dad.

All of that said, I don’t think it is bad for kids seeing their parents drink responsibly. After all, how do you expect to send your kids off to college if they don’t have some kind of positive drinking role model?

I think the biggest problem is how few people seem to drink responsibly. It seems most people either drink liberally or never. We don’t seem to be very good at the moderation thing.

How much do you feel comfortabble drinking around your kids?
