Does maternity leave harm careers?
Time Magazine examines, “Does maternity leave harm careers?”
Like the article says, I think it may be different for different people depending on their employer and the particular job.
I have 3 kids and upon returning from each maternity leave, my job was suddenly eliminated. Yes, three different times.
I’m in health care, so that’s not too far fetched, but still.
However, even though I didn’t realize it at the time, each job elimination landed me in a better place than I was.

This again goes to how employees are no longer considered assets, but rather comodity items, that if they “cost too much” are simply discarded with a newer (younger) “cheaper” model.
Much like when you buy a new cheap model of anything today over a well crafted version from the past the “long term” expense is rarely considered, even though the other model will serve better over time, nobody looks past the next quarter’s earnings report.

yep. First leave, my job was moved to another department, but I wasn’t moved with it. Second, my duties were stripped–position remained the same in title, but was significantly reduced. Both times, my office was moved while I was out too, so I came back to a cube of boxes, no phone and no data line for my computer. Nothing like that warm fuzzy welcome back.
