Does listening to music at work affect your productivity?
There’s an interesting opinion piece at The HR Daily Advisor, I Love My iPod® … But there’s this thing called Work!
The author maintains that music makes work productivity suffer and that workers should concentrate on work and nothing else. As expected, people are protesting that indeed they work better with music on and that it just depends on the person.
I go back and forth, some days I really get energized by listening to music at my desk, while other days it annoys me to no end.
I wonder if it is perhaps a generational thing as well? People who entered the workforce before the advent of personal electronics and music players may have a bigger problem with it than those who have always known headphones in their ears.
Actually, I think parents are more likely to be productive while listening to music, since we’re already quite adept at doing more than one thing at a time.

I’m with you E, I listen to music at work quite a bit. However, I try and adapt different genre’s to the work at hand. If I’m having to write a lot with research involved, it’s more than likely classical or something slow and chill like Chris Botti. If I’m knocking out a load of e-mails it’s usually Jay-Z and the boys that get me through my inbox 1 by 1.

Here’s a weird one for you. I definitely grew up with a Walkman surgically attached to my head. I like to wander around with my ipod, but I can’t do it when the kids are around without them bugging me incessantly. But at work? Not a note. Ever.
I don’t know why.
