Cool jobs
I’m a nurse, sometimes it’s interesting to kids, sometimes it’s not.
Occasionally, I get asked to speak at school, or, Scouts. I don’t work in patient care, so, sometimes I have a hard time explaining that a nurse doesn’t always directly take care of sick people, so, I don’t bring cool things like syringes or surgical masks if I talk to a class.
But, there are people around me with way cooler jobs than mine. I have a cousin who’s an astronaut, and, that’s far more impressive to kids. There’s surgeons, an attorney general, and, recording artists at the grade school alone, how do I compete when I tell kids of the fascinating world of data entry?
(Note: my job is fine, my kids are proud, and, no, I don’t really think I have to compete.)
Do you have one of those “Career Day” jobs where someone is always asking you to speak about what you do? Is it one of those “cool” jobs that other kids are always saying, “You dad is a _____?!” Tell us about it.
Maybe the kindergarten teachers will ask me to speak about blogging this year.

Nope. I’m a solicitor (which in Scotland means lawyer, not any of the many other slightly dodgy meanings!) and I’m pretty sure I’d send myself to sleep, never mind the class, if I had to talk about it. Mind you, since my text would probably be “Run! RUN! Run away from law school!”, that might be quite fun……

Wow, I think that Loth’s last sentence may be the greatest advice ever written. Seriously!

I quit nursing school my last semester to stay home and be with my son full-time; I think you got the better deal on the help us out end of things. I’d like to be asked to speak somewhere or help out but since I write full-time all anyone ever asks me to do is give them free copy work. I hope your K teacher does ask you to speak about blogging because that would be cool.
