Death of the “Supermom”?

I caught an interesting article the other day regarding a study from the University of Cambridge that said “most Britons believe that family life suffers if women work, prompting headlines about the death of ‘Supermum’.”
Ooooh… that word…. “supermom.”  It makes me cringe.  Because WHY does it always seem to be the women that deal with […]

Get rid of unwanted commitments

The beginning of the school year is a great time to take stock of all your commitments since all those sign-up sheets are in the mail.
Many people find themselves in over their heads with obligations and they don’t know how to get out, or they don’t realize that these things can be choices.
Dumb […]

Behind at work and home

I’ve been sick for several days, some sort of asthma or allergy attack.
It’s kept me out of work for a few days, but even more frustrating to me is that it’s kept me from doing much of anything at home.
I’m behind in both arenas, yet I can’t do much about either. I’ve been home […]

Mothers in Medicine

If any profession ranks up there with being difficult to achieve a work-life fit, it’s medicine.
Last week at BlogHer, I briefly spoke with a lovely lady whose site is called Mothers in Medicine.
It’s a multi-author blog with lots of different perspectives from physician-mothers.
Definitely worth your time.

The myth of balance

There’s a great post by Dr. Mary over at Work It, Mom! on The Myth of Balance, and one idea stuck with me:
Accepting that sometimes one thing has to get a bit more attention that another is yet another way that working moms can nourish and support themselves; it reduces “supermom” syndrome instantly.
We […]

A battery-only weekend for work-life balance

Erin of Unclutterer fame tried a novel approach to work-life balance one weekend:
On July 3, I decided that I was going to take a break from my laptop and from work for the three-day holiday weekend. Unfortunately, I had a few small tasks I needed to do over the weekend, so I knew I couldn’t […]

Is work-life balance outdated?

We talk a lot about work-life balance since many people want to balance or fit the two together.
Different generations have tried different ways to make both work together, but the Generation Y workers and parents of today don’t believe that balance is possible and they see work and life as being blended.
I’m not sure there […]

Ted Nugent on work-life balance

I’m sharing this with you simply because of the line, “Ted Nugent is the poster child for work-life balance.”
I’m sure I should say something wise here about what he can teach us, but, I am distracted by the fact it’s The Nuge.
It’s the 4th of July, a holiday in the United States and Friday elsewhere. […]

Levels of work-life balance

Occasionally, when I read something about work-life balance at my place of business, I bristle, but I’m not sure why.
It’s a good thing that employers are addressing it, but sometimes it just rings hollow for me to see yet another flyer for a lunch and learn series touting how to “achieve work-life balance” or an […]

Balancing work and pregnancy

Forbes has an interesting article about balancing work and pregnancy.
It gives some solid advice about how to prepare for maternity leave and how to tell your boss and coworkers as well as how to handle any potential discrimination issues that might arise.
I’ve been on both sides of the pregnancy issue at work, and […]
