One of the hazards of being a working parent is the moment you get “the call” from daycare or school, “Your child has a fever (insert other contagious illness, here), come get them.”
All at once, you feel deflated because that parking lot dose of ibuprofen didn’t hold (kidding. mostly.) and you worry that something might […]

Amy at Milkbreath and Margaritas pens a great working mother’s ode to the room mother:
Thank you for organizing the class parties and offering to drive for the field trips. Thank you for all that you do to help the teacher throughout the year.
I’m not a room mother. I would get caught on a conference call […]

There’s an interesting discussion going on at The Juggle, How Do Working Parents Keep Up With School News?.
At first glance, it seems like the issue is about how to get “official” school news, but, in the comments, the deeper issue seems to be, “How do working parents get the ‘inside scoop’ at school?”
Parents who […]

When I read this article about Work-Homeschool balance, I realized I’d never thought of this before: are there homeschooling parents who both work outside the home?
How does that work? Just curious.
That sounds like it would give a new meaning to “balance”.

The holiday season is upon us, and, it’s time to think about how to handle giving gifts to your child’s teacher.
We talked about 5 Great Teacher Gifts last year, and, I’m glad you enjoyed those selections.
I have an interesting dilemma this year, though.
I had decided that this year we were going to […]

I call the end of October, and, the beginning of November the period in which we pay full school tuition, yet our kids don’t actually go to school.
On Halloween, everyone could wear costumes, and, there was fun and games, so, I’m thinking that, as it should be on Halloween, not much learning was taking place. […]

My husband is a teacher, and, one of the advantages (No, it’s not the pay, but that was a good guess. Not.) is that he can sometimes get to the kids’ school activities that are near the end of the school day.
Today was the kindergarten Halloween party, and, the room mother called me last week […]

Fresh on the heels of our earlier discussion, there’s an interesting discussion afoot at the Guam Daily News about scheduling parent teacher conferences in order for working parents to attend.

A quarter of the school year has passed already, and, many parents are either looking forward to, or, bracing themselves for a parent-teacher conference.
At the risk of sounding discontented with my kids’ school, (I’m not, I love their school), another thing besides the lack of e-mail notification that bugs me is the fact that we […]

My kids go to a small private school, so, perhaps larger school systems already have something like this in place, but, one thing that drives me crazy as a working parent is that school-wide urgent communication occurs at my home.
The home without people in it during the day to answer the phone.
Sure, there’s a […]
