Benefits of working at the office
The project that I was able to work on from home came to a sudden, unexpected end. I found out Friday that Friday was my last day and I would be working at a different client yesterday.
I already miss working from home, but there are some positives to being back at the office.
Less paranoia - In the office, you can see the mood of the office and the project. You rarely have to worry about whether you are doing too little or moving too slowly.
Focus - It is hard to work from home. Being forced to drive to the office helps provide a transition between home life and career life. Once I get to the office, it takes me very little time to be ready to start working. When I was at home, it was very easy to want to spend a couple more minutes getting breakfast or talking to the kids before sitting down to work.
Higher Profile - Out of sight is good. Out of mind is bad. You never want your boss to forget who you are or how important you are. Being buried in the basement where you are not seeing coworkers, clients, and managers is probably bad when promotion time comes around.
Fewer Hours - While I was working from home, I was willing to work some overtime. I also snuck in a couple hours here and there to get ahead (or keep up) on projects. It is very tempting to just check the emails or just spend a few minutes reviewing the project; most of which you end up doing for free.
I still think that I prefer to work from home and already miss the opportunity. Especially since it ended earlier than I expected.
I think the best mix for me would be alternating assignments. I don’t think I would do well with working every other day from home. I think I would prefer something like two weeks at home and then one or two weeks at a client’s.
I will definitely keep my ear open for opportunities to work at home, though. They are pretty rare and if I jumped on every one I could find I would still spend most of my time working at client offices.
